Film: Koyaanisqatsi (1982, USA)
By: Godfrey Reggio
Trailer. Official website. IMDB.

Entry: FREE.

Koyaanisqatsi in ancient Uto-Aztecan language means “unbalanced life”. It is the first film in the Qatsi (“life”) trilogy, directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke (creator of “Baraka” and “Samsara”).

The film opens with magnificent images out of nature: great canyons and limitless deserts and a world without man. Through the use of speeded-up images, clouds climb the sides of mountains and speed across the sky, their shadows painting the landscape.

Then the movie turns to images of smokestacks, factories and expressways. The message of the filmmaker is that nature is wonderful, but that Western civilization is a rotten despoiler that is creating a “crazy life.”
