TALK by: Steven James (DasFalke)

ENTRY fee: donation.

The art of Japanese Rope Bondage or Shibari is becoming increasingly popular throughout the western world. The contemporary meaning of Shibari describes an ancient Japanese artistic form of rope bondage. The origins of Shibari can be found in Hojojutsu, the martial art of restraining captives.

Our guest speaker Steven James has been been at the forefront of the explosion of interest in this form of art over recent years. Steven, aka DasFalke, is one of Europe’s better known artists specialising in Shibari (Kinbaku). During the talk Steven will do his best to pass on his philosophy regarding the emotional and spiritual components of the art form using images and a live demonstration as illustrations:

“My philosophy is simply that the one being tied surrenders to the ropes, and I as the one tying surrenders to the moment. There is indeed beauty in the suffering that accompanies the complete surrender to the now… In Kinbaku it is all about the energy, and where that energy will shift us. It is about individuals relating to one another at a very basic level. It is about tying another with loving energy and compassion, combined with a sense of eroticism that comes directly from the soul, and the heart. Combining all these elements with the overall aim of highlighting the traditional Kinbaku celebration of Beauty in Suffering.”

Steven’s artistic expressions include live public and private performance. Collaborations with a diverse range of photographers and visual artists including video and film makers and occasionally sketch artists and painters. Examples of his photograph work can be seen http://dasfalke.tumblr.com/

More recently Steven has been involved in his own creation Sacred Rope Berlin. This is the vehicle that he uses to teach both newcomers and experienced practitioners his own personal style of Kinbaku.

Over the past few decades the term ‘shamanism’ has been popularised throughout the western world, especially in the new-age circles. What is shaman role today? How to distinguish between traditional forms of shamanism and simple esoteric practices?

Our special guest Taita Juan is a well known and highly respected shaman from Colombian Amazon. He will share his wisdom about traditional shamanism, power plants, such as Ayahuasca which are known for their psychoactive effects.
Later on, he will chant some traditional ayahuasca songs accompanied by guitar and kindly let you experience the effect of sacred medicine.

It is a remarkable fusion of Indian melody and European harmony, where the original sounds are woven equally into a colourful sound pattern. Joining traditional and folk music with classical tabla grooves, carried by memorable, original guitar riffs and enlightened with the sound of the sitar, banjo and Indian bamboo flute, “Back to India” easily unites modern and traditional sounds in a global musical context.

Since 2008 “Back to India” has been creating and constantly developing their sound and presenting on stage (Carnival of cultures, Indian embassy, “Markt der Kontinente” in the ethnological museum or the Indian Embassy in Berlin).

Guided MEDITATION: Training the Mind
June 7 (Sunday), 21:00

psychoactive_horiz

Every Sunday we gather to meditate and get some motivation to continue doing it regularly.

Meditation is the most useful skill you can master. It can bring the mind to the end of suffering, something no other skill can do. But it’s also the most subtle and demanding skill there is. It requires all the mental qualities ordinarily involved in mastering a physical skill — mindfulness and alertness, persistence and patience, discipline and ingenuity — but to an extraordinary degree. This is why, when you come to meditation, it’s good to reflect on any skills, crafts, or disciplines you’ve already mastered so that you can apply the lessons they’ve taught you to the training of the mind.
